The United Kingdom’s ruling Labour Party is facing mounting political tensions following the resignation of former Health Secretary Wes Streeting and growing calls for Andy Burnham to return to Parliament amid uncertainty over the future leadership of the party.

The situation intensified after Labour MP Josh Simons announced that he would resign as Member of Parliament for Makerfield in order to allow Burnham to contest the seat. In a statement released on Thursday, Simons said he was stepping aside because he believed Burnham could provide the leadership needed to restore public confidence in Labour and drive major political reforms across the country.


“Today, I am putting the people I represent and the country I love first and will be resigning as MP for Makerfield,” Simons said. “I am standing aside so that Andy Burnham can return to his home.”

Simons admitted the decision had not been easy but argued that Labour had lost the trust of many voters and now had “one last chance” to rebuild support through economic growth, border security, and political reform. He described Burnham as “the change the country is crying out for” and insisted that he was the right person to lead the fight ahead.


Meanwhile, former Health Secretary Wes Streeting officially resigned from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government after publicly criticizing the Labour leader’s direction and leadership style.

In a strongly worded resignation letter shared on X, Streeting said he had “lost confidence” in Starmer’s leadership and described it as “dishonourable and unprincipled” to remain in government under the current circumstances.

One of the most striking sections of the letter read: “Where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift.”

Streeting accused the Labour leadership of failing to inspire confidence at a time when the UK is facing economic challenges, global conflicts, and growing uncertainty over the future. He also warned that younger generations are facing a worse future than previous generations and argued that Labour needed bold ideas and stronger leadership to restore trust among voters.

The former health secretary further suggested that the debate over Labour’s future should not focus on personalities but on ideas and leadership capable of taking the party forward into the next general election.

Despite his criticism, Streeting thanked Starmer for giving him the opportunity to serve as Health Secretary, describing the role as “the greatest joy” of his political career.


Streeting has become the first cabinet minister to resign from Starmer’s government following last week’s election results. He joins several other ministers who stepped down earlier in the week, including Miatta Fahnbulleh, Jess Phillips, Alex Davies-Jones and Zubir Ahmed, all of whom expressed concerns over the party’s direction and leadership.

Supporters of Streeting claim he already has enough backing from Labour MPs to launch a leadership challenge against Starmer, while reports suggest more resignations could follow in the coming days.

At the same time, allies of Andy Burnham are openly calling for the Prime Minister to begin an orderly transition process within the Labour Party. One Burnham supporter reportedly said Burnham was the only figure capable of uniting Labour and defeating Reform UK at the next general election.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer later responded to Streeting’s resignation by thanking him for his service and insisting that Labour must continue delivering on the promises made to the British people.

“Thank you for your letter. I am very sorry that you have stepped down from Government,” Starmer wrote in his response.
